It’s Friday night and you have just had a long day at work and your friends call you to see if you want to go out and grab a bite to eat. You just let your pooch out of the kennel and you would feel terrible if you had to stick her back in there after 9 hours all ready! So you pass and sit at home to play with your pup and watch TV. Don’t get me wrong this doesn’t sound like a bad idea, but the typical 40 hour work week doesn’t give us much extra time to see friends and family and spending quality time with our pets.
Maybe you have been wanting a dog for a while, but don’t think you will have enough time for them. Chances are you have a job, kids, or other obligations keeping you from adopting a furry companion. How are you going to be able to potty train your new puppy with 8 hr days at work? Or maybe you already have pets and have been using your neighbor, close family, or a friend to come take care of them when you take a much needed 2 week vacation or get called away for unexpected business. And let’s say you do go out with friends or family, you may have to cut it short to get back home to your babies to let them out and feed them!
As convenient as it sounds to use a neighbor or close friend for YOU, it may not be as convenient for THEM. And seeing that you are great friends, right? They may think it is ok to show up an hour later than you asked or loosely follow your detailed instructions. After all you can’t get mad at them because maybe you aren’t paying them or maybe you are reimbursing them with those homemade cookies they love!
Either way it’s going to be difficult to give your very detailed to slightly insane instructions without coming across as demanding. We as pet parents know it is just as hard for us to take care of our babies (like literally babies with fur) when last minute plans come up as it is for our friends with “human” babies is! A lot of plans have been cancelled because Sophie the poodle needs to be let out or fed.
Wouldn’t it be great to know someone who you could call anytime to come let her out and even give her a walk! How cool would it be if you could ask them to send you pictures (because after 8 hours you miss her already) and updates every visit too! They wouldn’t even laugh at the fact that you have to mix her food a certain way and hand feed her to get her to eat, or fluff her pillow because that is what you do for her every day and she is accustomed to it.
If this sounds like you, you might need a pet sitter!
